Sassy’s trailer looked abandoned. If I had to guess, she didn’t spend much time fixing it up. After all, this place was just a stopgap for her. She had big dreams ... and they wouldn’t have entailed staying here.

I used my magic to make us invisible long enough for the walk up her driveway. Raven quickly opened the front door, and once we were inside I dropped the haze that had hidden us. Raven commented on the trailer’s interior before I could.

“What a dump.”

I nodded in agreement. “Definitely.”

“How could she live like this?” Raven screwed up her face as she stepped over a couch cushion on the floor.

“I don’t think she did this.” I glanced around. “I don’t think she was clean by any stretch of the imagination, but I very much doubt she did this.”

Raven nodded in understanding. “The cops have been here.”

“They have.” I should’ve expected it. Sassy was brutally murdered and strung up as a message — whether a distraction or not. Law enforcement would have to do a deep dive on her past. “This is ... a lot to sift through.”

“Then we’d better get to it.” Raven went to the bookcase. “Do we think the cops found what they were looking for?”

“I don’t know.” I thought about my meeting with Kevin and shook my head. “Kevin Dobson seems focused on us ... or maybe me in particular.”

Raven made a face. “You should’ve modified his memory when the crazy stalker showed up in Alabama. I knew he was going to be an issue.”

I glared at her back. “Well, I didn’t. If it was a mistake — and I’m not saying it was — we’ll have to deal with it now. Things are a mess.”

“They’re definitely a mess,” Raven agreed. “What exactly did he say to you?”

I related our visit to his office. I was still hesitant as I wrapped things up. “I don’t know what he’s thinking.”

“You could’ve looked in his head.”

“That’s how I found out about Sassy’s body.”

“Yes, but you only went for the surface thoughts.” Raven’s gaze was measuring when it landed on me. “I don’t want to tell you your business.”

“But you will,” I muttered.

She pretended she hadn’t heard me. “He’s going to be a problem. You feel as if you created that problem. In some ways, you did, but not in the ways you think.”

I found myself getting agitated. “How did I create the problem but not really create the problem?”

“He fell for you, but you didn’t realize it. Everybody else did, including Luke. I remember him worrying at the time. It was one of the few instances I didn’t want to throttle him. He feared the detective was becoming too attached to you.”

“I believe he mentioned that a few times,” I said dryly. What I didn’t say was that I should’ve listened to Luke. But that would only go to his head and I couldn’t deal with an ego outburst on top of everything else. “It’s too late to fix things now.”

“It’s not.
